Boy! did it rain, & hail this morn; big as chicken egg; & heavy we didn’t get to church, heavy thunder. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came, had lunch here. Nice sunshine this afternoon; pretty warm again. The Peveley truck went through & hit the electric wire by Joe Watchel tore it lose, & took piece of the truck, but he never stopped; Rob. & Joe & Geo. Wagner took charge of it, took the wire of [sic] altogether, disconected [sic], till the power line came through, tore there post down, have to wash it with wadboard now, & no electric lights, Joe said last nite, if it only holds till the power line comes, they got the posts all set from New Athens till in town here, but they had to go to Percy & make repairs there from the storm they had down there, then coming back & continue here agin, just following the telephone line. There is a free dance at Log cabin tonite, musci [sic] by Skaer’s, Miss Viola Schallann & Rubemeyer had a wedding dance at Valmeyer, he is from there, Omer & Tillie went there, sure had a nice crowd.

Today threshing begins Joe & Geo. Schilling & Joe Watchels; at E. Rettinghouse. Pap & Rose went to Belleville with 28 springs 59 lbs. @ 20¢. Pap put new screens on basement.

We washed, ironed. Papa went to town, mailed New Year cards for Aunt Mary. Joe Watchel’s butchering today. John Kaltwasser was nearly frozen stiff the other day, he is pretty old & lives by himself, didn’t have no fire, nothing to eat. Geo. Wagner came borrowed our scale to weigh some saussage [sic]. Mr. Chas Guebert & son came looked at our mare, but it is to small.

Mr. Jim Parker is being buried this morning but none of us can go, we have to go to Henry’s threshing, oats; the grandsons were pallbearers; 3 of Geo Parker’s, & Paul & Clyde Pautler & Hy. Birkner; the daughter, Sister Amada was also home; came Thurs.; it was an awful large funeral. Henry had threshers for dinner & lunch, & supper; moved here about 4 o’clock. Klotz & Watchel machine threshed this & Geo. Schilling moved onto Blackburn’s. Henry threshed altogether 1108 bus; 394 bus. here & 714 out there, highest oats threshed so far; we got for our share 369 bus. Pabsts bought oats 47 bus.

We washed, ironed, baked etc. Went out to Henry’s getting ready for threshing. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary were up. Papa went down to Pabsts threshing we got 57 bus. there. So hot. Ed Coop’s have a baby boy. There were 2 motor cycles in town last night laying of some stunts, riding standing up, selling chances on! Agnes Parker took a ride, there were strange fellows. Pete Watchel town marshall, send them out of town, to dangerous.

We cut in 3 gals. sour kraut [sic], bus. basket full. Leona brought Henry & Emil up, she went back had to go to Waterloo Robert to instructions. Joe Watchel was here yesterday evening awhile. Mr. Fred Werner died, buried this afternoon at Belleville, Walnut Hill cemetery. He was pretty old. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary were up, he helped shack wheat this afternoon. Mr. & Mrs. Vic Geodelle of Waterloo have a 9½ lb. baby girl born June 26 & Herman Miller of St. Louis have a 7½ lb. baby girl born June 21. Mr. & Mrs. Harbaugh grand parents of Waterloo.

We girls, Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary & Leona & Billy went to church, Mrs. Eulers funeral, from Querheim Chapel at Waterloo to Hecker Church 9′ o clock; large funeral quite a few flowers. Just 18 yrs. mother dead. Henry & boys came up to make hay, had dinner. Emil came with the wagon this afternoon, & Pete Watchel helped yet, all had lunch here. It started in to rain, so they didn’t get finished with the hay. G. Wagner here a little while. Eggs 21¢ today. Rogation Day’s.

Floyd 6 yr. birthday; We had clean up day, washed curtains, scrub basement etc. Went to Red Bud, lent devotions to nite, we celebrated Floyd’s birthday last night there. Papa went to town settled with Schillings lumber bill; they are sawing in Hecker now. The fire chiefs had there truck out today, pumping water in the barrels from Watchel’s & Kammlers wells. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came up, went to church, lent devotions.
Saturday, Jan. 19, 1935
There is telephone general election this afternoon, we heard, Mrs. Dueker has an application in for the board, & 2 others, but old officers & Liz Boll were reelected. There is a sale at the Public School, old chairs & benches, school desks, piano Wm. Birkner got for $2.25 to make butchering table. Rob Laut got hay. Mr. & Mrs. Steve Rennecker, Mr. & Mrs. Joe Watchel & son & Mr. & Mrs. Rob. Laut & son, were visiting here this evening, the men enjoyed in a solo game & ladies pinochle; what a time. Mrs. Watchel held 1500 trumps in diamonds. Miss Edith Klinckhadt is employed as wash maid at Roy Staufenbiel. All getting along O.K.
