Bert [Bertille] went out to Henry’s helped her [Leona] house clean, 2 rooms. Henry & Billy [Willis] brought load corn up here. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary were here, she went up to school house for meeting, making plans for centennial mass to be. Kenneth Kemp was here, looking for Emil. He isn’t at home tonite.

Beautiful rain last nite, settled dust for awhile. Rob. Payne democratic candidate for clerk was here this eve. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary stopped, went to Red Bud. Harry Wittenauer’s finished sewing wheat here today. Henry & family were up, he got some more wheat to sew; Listened to Major Bowes on radio.

Bert [Bertille] cleaned dining room, varnished floor & chairs. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary were up this afternoon. Henry & family came to get seed wheat this eve. Bill [Klein] & Bert [Bertille] went to Paderborn to nite – euchre, had to go to Floraville & back to Paderborn oiling the road again now. Bert [Bertille] had 10 out of 12 got alumnium [sic] cook pot; dance after euchre, musci [sic] by Hy. Kettler; nice crowd.
Monday, Sept. 19, 1938
Bert [Bertille] washed ironed. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary were up all day, he worked across street, had beef soup dinner they brought here, had dinner & supper. Celestine Neff was here selling chances on bedspread, donations to go for recovering aisle for centennial mass, which will be in Nov. 11. Pap went to meeting at Kammler’s hall; about the farm plans again. Mrs. Bill Gallagher died this morn. is at Kochs parlor, she was ill for about week; will be buried Wed. morn at Red Bud. Leo & family & Henry & family were here this eve. Radio say frost tonite..

Nice cool morning, after all the rain yesterday. Bert [Bertille] ironed, patched; pap. plowed orchard & harrowed it. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary were up this afternoon working across street. Hall’s big animal circus , coming to town tomorrow nite only. Adm. 20 & 10. and elphant [sic] weighing 5000 lbs. big girl jumbo. Henry & family & Leo & family. It is awful cool this eve; with light rain.

Nice cool day. Pap cut 3 shocks corn has 10 cut now. Then hauled 2 loads wood, put 1 in basement. Henry & family brought 3 sacks potatoes, then went to Gus Blackburn’s school meeting.
Monday, Aug. 22, 1938
Washed, ironed. Pap hauled load gravel. There is a family living at Uncle Adam’s place, people that work the hackers; man 70 yrs. boy 16 – Man & lady & 4 kids. Leona & Billy [Willis] were here all afternoon brought the car to Probst to get switch put on; brought the pictures along, all took good. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary came, he is working across street. We went to Orlet’s this eve; they had 2 flat tires, so pap & Leo went to Stahls Garage with our car & got tires fixed & air put in. They bought a baby buggy from Mrs. Rahn at Waterloo this afternoon $2.00.

Pap went & got Rose [Rosalia] & baby [Marita], we canned 25 qts peaches & tomatoes & cooked catsup & preserves. boy what a hot day. Leo came for supper, to get them. Henry & family came this eve. also.
Tuesday, Aug. 2, 1938
Washed, ironed. Billy’s [Willis] 5 yr. birthday today. Hy. Armstutz came got coop chickens old hens we shipped 24. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary over here. Oscar Goedelle was buried yesterday at Waterloo. We went out to Henry’s Billy’s birthday; had cake & cherry juice. Cleveland’s, Geodelle’s, Orlets families were present, music & singing.

Cloudy. We went to Red Bud to Ford Dealer & Chev. & there we got 1938 Chev. Coupe with heater & froster, 6 sets chains for $580 & old Chev. 1926 model $164.00. Black coupe pretty good trade. We canned 2 qts pickles & tomatoes; fixed garage for new car. Kleins got about 2 [cents] bu. for our onions & 50 [cents] bu. potatoes. last Thurs. at St. Louis. Bill [Klein] started working there today in store. Jac. Erle was here to Ins. [insure] car; also Ms. Becker, we insured with Becker for liability & property damage $16.65 yr. Henry & family came brought potatoes, quite a few bushels, & nice ones they got this year. Emil came over to look at the car; same as Uncle Fred’s.
