Cleaned chicken house, pap cut wheat. Went to Leo’s took hog back, & stopped at Jac Neffs longest 4 shoats $18.00. Wittenauers cutting alfalfa today.

Saturday, June 17, 1939

Went to Orlet’s; they finished cutting last nite & shocked this morn. Bert [Bertille] baked coffee cake with dewberries, & canned 2 qts. Went to Waterloo church this afternoon. Wittenauers started cutting wheat here. Mrs. Rob. Groom (Kate Birkner) is being buried this afternoon at Belleville, she died on operation table. Sure is hot, & oats bugs terrible. Louis Cawell is giving a barn dance in the new barn tonite. Susie Gal of Hills is appearing at Log Cabin with “Sons of Ozarks.”

Tuesday, June 13, 1939

Raining all morn. & cloudy all day. Wittenauer’s came worked corn. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary came he went to Waterloo with wheat & got oil changed in his car. Ironed few pieces. Pap picked dewberries, got pt. & 2 glasses jelley [sic]; canned 1 qt. 1 pt. beets. Eggs 13 [cents] Wheat 70.

Saturday, May 27, 1939

Went to funeral of Ignatz Klein 77 yrs. nephews, pallbearers. Emil was over while this afternoon. Wittenauers cut hay today. Rain this eve.

Sunday, May 7, 1939

Went to Red Bud mass. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary stopped awhile. Conner of Paderborn was here wants an old horse. Miss Reickert of Waterloo came, Bert [Bertille] went along showed her where Uncle Freds live; she bought the piece of furniture with drawers from them for $2.50 they paid 10 [cents] at Crook’s sale. Bill [Klein] came this afternoon. There was an accident by John Krehers, cars from Lebanon turned around & Geo. Parker & Muskoff driving Clarence Wittenauers car, smashed into them people from other car were taken to Belleville in Dashners ambulance, Parker & Muskoff never got hurt, but car was pulled to Red Bud to Schrieber’s for repairs; claim was the Lebanon car fault.

Monday, May 1, 1939

Washed, ironed, sprayed trees etc. Mauff agent was here. Wittenauers working here. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary were up working garden, planted out tomatoe plants.

Saturday, April 29, 1939

Nice today. Went to sale Marquardts this afternoon & to church at Waterloo. Wittenauers are working ground here for corn; plowing & harrowing. Floyd had blood poison last week; alright again now.

Friday, April 14, 1939

Cloudy & April showers. We cut chickens wings; worked garden, washed car, cleaned house. H. Wittenauer worked up here, sewed corner in alfalfa, plowing ball ground now, for corn.

Monday, March 20, 1939

Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary & pap went to see the O leary place. Bert [Bertille] washed; fried in bacon & sausage, we made garden planted out, onions frost proof plants cabbage 62; pears lettuce, spinach. Pap sewed clover seed. Wittenauer finished sewing oats here. Sure beautiful day 60 [degrees]. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary were at Athens got there quilt, this eve came to Hecker, & she & Bert [Bertille] went quilting, Firemen got 2 quilts in again, both plain, peach & green.

Len. Mertz bought 80 acres ground from Wm. Gregson, not quite $9.00 acre. Harry Wittenauer was here.
